Equivio>EmailThreads captures and structures email threads. Equivio>EmailThreads utilizes patent-pending technology to drastically reduce the number of emails that need to be read in litigation review and internal investigations.

The key differentiator of the product is the use of content-centric analysis. Other email thread systems use metadata, such as the Microsoft conversation index, sender/recipient names, normalized time stamps, and forward/reply flags. However, such metadata is often missing or corrupt, and are subject to misinterpretation and even tampering. By contrast, Equivio's content-centric technology provides a very robust solution that is not dependent on the specific idiosyncrasies and configurations of particular email systems and formats.

Equivio's content-centric strategy also allows users to focus review efforts on the last email in a thread. When using metadata to structure email threads, the reviewer cannot be sure that the terminating email in a thread contains all the previous layers in that thread. Equivio>EmailThreads, however, analyzes the email content. This allows the tool to identify "inclusives". An inclusive contains all the preceding emails in a thread. By reading just the inclusives, review time is reduced significantly. In trials of the product on the Enron case data, the number of emails for review was reduced from 550,000 to 140,000. This represents a saving of almost 75%.

The input to Equivio>EmailThreads is an unstructured collection of emails. Equivio can accept emails in either native or extracted text format, including both fielded and non-fielded email files. Equivio groups emails belonging to a thread, and builds the thread hierarchy. In reconstructing the thread, Equivio identifies the original email, and builds the various branches of the thread from subsequent “events”, such as reply and forward.

The output data is loaded into the user’s standard review platform. The output data defines the thread to which an email belongs, as well as the internal structure of the thread. In the review system, the thread can be presented in either GUI or numerical format.

Equivio also enables a condensed view of the email thread. In the condensed view, emails originating from the same "send" event are grouped together on the same node. The condensed view simplifies the presentation of the thread, allowing the user to immediately and intuitively understand the conversation flow.
